As well as scented plants, you also need stunning flowers and colors. The orchids include some absolute beauties, such as Pleione formosana, manh of which do not need a high-tech, humid conservatory, and can be grown easily on a windowsill.
Also look out for the calico flower (Aristolochia littoralis) with its bizarre yellow, purple, and brown mottled flowers; peering into the flared open end of a bloom is like looking into a curved smoker's pipe.

Tibouchina.

For rich blues, go for the Brazilian spider flower (Tibouchina urvilleana) with its royal purple flowers; for magenta-red, try Bougainvillea 'Scarlett O'Hara'; and for flashy yellow, there is the magnificent golden trumpet (Allamanda cathartica).
