POTS AND POTTING MIXES

Pots for Houseplants

  • All plant containers should have holes at the bottom, which should be covered with a piece of old window screen topped with a layer of gravel or broken styrofoam peanuts to aid drainage and keep the potting mix from washing out.

  • Select a pot that is one or two sizes larger than the original, and clean the new pot with disinfectant.

  • Soak the plant for an hour before repotting it. Put a layer of potting mix over the gravel, insert the plant, and ensure that the top of the soil is 2 in. below the pot's rim to allow for watering.

Potting Mix

  • Soil-based mix works for most houseplants. It may come with varying levels of fertilizer: less for seedlings, more for mature plants and hungry feeders.

  • Fiber-based composts are ideal for plants that need good drainage, while specialist growing media, such as epiphytic mixes for orchids, are available from garden centers.
