WHERE TO GROW HOUSEPLANTS

Conservatories are ideal environments for houseplants because you can tailor the conditions exactly to the plants' needs—in the home, plants must fit in with your requirements. But homes do offer different conditions: bathrooms have good humidity (ideal for ferns); kitchen widows provide bright light (perfect for culinary herbs); and bedrooms give the stable temperatures that many plants enjoy.

Bathrooms are perfect places for plants that enjoy
a warm, humid atmosphere, such as ferns and
yuccas.

If a plant is not happy in one room, move it to another with different conditions. Most plants need bright light to manufacture food and release energy (those with colored or variegated leaves need especially high light levels). A few, such as caci and succulents, cope with direct sun; the rest prefer indirect light away from a window, but not in shade. Plants grow toward the light, so turn them every few days for even growth.
