There is a huge range of trees, in all shapes and sizes, for gardens large and small, flamboyant and subdued. Evergreen or deciduous, trees are the best way of injecting height, shape and structure, summer shade, and long winter shadows across the lawn. And the most rewarding provide colored bark, flowers, fruits, flashy autumn leaves, and a tracery of winter stems.
Trees are a key part of garden design. They can offer a delightful change of pace by creating shady conditions for planting such flowers as bluebells and cyclamen, or for siting a garden seat. They can be used to denote an outer boundary, to signal the entrance to a completely different part of the garden, or to act as the focal point within a specific area, encapsulating its style and mood.
But probably the best reason for growing trees is that they inject year-round value and character. While perennials come and go, trees give a rich, textured sense of permanence in any garden situation.
A tree is a long-term investment. Before buying, check its final size, as well as its site and soil requirements, to ensure that it will become a first-rate feature.
